Under general supervision, abstracts physician billing information from medical records and selects the appropriate ICD-9, CPT, and qualifying modifier codes as defined by regulatory agencies. Identifies and ! codes unbundled and bundled services/procedures, global servic! es and/or appropriate concurrent services according to coding guidelines. Captures all necessary information from operative reports and procedure notes to ensure a clean and accurate claim is submitted for payment. Enters coded information into the billing system and reviews denial reports to ensure all charges are billed within timely filing limits. Interacts directly with physicians and clearly communicates coding concerns, documentation issues and changes in coding rules. Utilizes ICD-9 CM coding books, 3M and/or encoder to accurately code diagnoses based on the physician's documented diagnosis. Maintains updated coding and billing knowledge to include regularly reviewing Medicare, Medicaid and Insurance bulletins and related material. Acts as a functional resource and provides cross coverage to other coding staff as needed. Assists with the review of clinical information as requested.
1. Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or;
Registered He! alth Information Administrator (RHIA) or eligible, or;
Certified Coding Specialist (CCS / CCS-P) or; equivalent combination of education and/or physician coding experience.
2. One to two years of E/M; surgical/procedure coding experience including all types of related inpatient and ambulatory cases, in either cardiovascular, orthopedic, OB/GYN or Urology, depending on the assigned physician practice.
3. Experience in computerized encoding and abstracting in a Windows-based environment preferred.
