Position Summary
This position performs General diagnostic ultrasound testing such as Abdominal, OB/GYN, and small parts examinations. An Ultrasound Technologist is a Diagnostic Ultrasound Professional that is qualified by professional credentialing, academic, and clinical experience to provide diagnostic general and vascular patient care services using ultrasound and related diagnostic procedures. The scope of practice of the Ultrasound Technologist includes those procedures, acts and processes permitted by law, for which the individual has received education and clinical experience, has demonstrated competency, and has completed the appropriate American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS). The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for the independent operation of sonographic equipment, and for performing and communicating findings of diagnostic examinations using sonography as appropriate. The Ultrasound Technologist is responsible for daily operations of the ultrasound lab, patient schedule, equipment maintenance, the report of equipment failures, and quality assessment (QA). The sonographer maintains a high standard of medical ethics at all times and is self-motivated to pursue lifelong learning to increase level of understanding and knowledge of the field, disease, and new procedures as they evolve.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL:
(50%)* Performs clinical assessment and diagnostic sonography examinations according to defined imaging protocols. Uses cognitive sonographic skills to identify, record, and adapt procedures as appropriate to anatomical, pathological, diagnostic information and images. Uses independent judgment during the sonographic exam to accurately differentiate between normal and pathologic findings. Analyze sonograms, synthesizes sonographic information and medical history, and communicates findings to the appropriate physician. Prepares equipment for ordered exam; transports patients as needed; explains procedure to patient; performs exam; records exam; consults with radiologist as needed.
(15%)* Assumes responsibility for the safety, mental and physical comfort of patients while they are in the ultrasound technologistâs care.
(20%)* Provides excellent customer service. Demonstrates professionalism and courtesy at all times toward all employees, physicians, associated staff and MidMichigan Health customers and potential customers. Cooperates with other personnel to achieve departmental and hospital goals; attends/participates in departmental and hospital meetings.
(15%)* Provides department specific on call related duties days, evenings, and weekends as assigned.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises and trains student sonographers.
Participates in obtaining and/or maintenance of ultrasound lab accreditation.
Maintains ultrasound equipment and work area and adequate supplies.
Performs other work-related duties as assigned including assisting in other areas of the department as needed.
Provides ultrasound guidance for biopsies/aspirations.

Credentials:
* Basic Life Support
* ARDMS AB within one year
* ARMDS OB/GYN within one year
* ARDMS-RVT OR CCI-RVS within two years of date of hire.

Current compliance with Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for specialty(ies) as appropriate and ARDMS re-credentialing yearly requirements to maintain active registrant status.
Interpersonal skills needed to communicate successfully with individuals and groups and interact with people at all levels to communicate ideas and concepts in a clear and understandable manner in person and by phone.
One year work experience in a hospital setting is preferred.
Physical/Mental Requirements and Working Conditions
Exposure to stressful situations, including those involving public contact, as well as, trauma, grief and death.
Able to wear personal protective equipment that includes latex materials or appropriate substitute if required for your position.
Is able to move freely about facility with or without an assisted device and must be able to perform the functions of the job as outlined in the job description.
Overall vision and hearing is necessary with or without assisted device(s).
Frequently required to sit/stand/walk for long periods of time. May require frequent postural changes such as stooping, kneeling or crouching.
Some exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious material. Must follow MidMichigan Health bloodborne pathogen and TB testing as required.
Ability to handle multiple tasks, get along with others, work independently, regular and predictable attendance and ability to stay awake.
Overall dexterity is required including handling, reaching, grasping, fingering and feeling. May require repetition of these movements on a regular to frequent basis.
Physical Demand Level: Light. Must be able to occasionally (0-33% of the workday) lift or carry 11-20 lbs., frequently (34-66% of the workday) 10 lbs. and or Walk/Stand/Push/Pull of Arm/Leg controls.
