MANAGER PATIENT ACCOUNTING for MERCY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL SYSTEM

The medical staff consists of approximately 295 professionals, with gross revenue exceeding $40 million and A/R days averaging 52 days. MMHS is a national leader in treatment of heart attack, congestive heart failure, pneumonia and surgical care. It is also a pacesetter in Michigan for obstetrics, emergency care, intensive care, controlling infections and organ donation.
MMHS seeks a strong leader with a track record of success in managing hospital accounts receivable operations and team development. Must have experience and a solid understanding of how the physician and facility business office operations tie together for maximum effectiveness.
Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this leader will be responsible for managing overall operations and financial activities within Patient Accounting for both professional and facility billing. Overall responsibilities include managing the hospitals accounts receivables, management and direction of the department in the processing and control of the hospital’s receivable and bad debt.
Based in Monroe, Michigan, this position is responsible for analyzing and streamlining patient accounting operations to maximize efficiency in payment processing. The key deliverable for the first year is to implement the hospital’s new revenue cycle system. Six team leads (Medicare, BCBSM, Cash/Financial Counselors, Commercial, Medicaid, and Professional Services) and 19 staff report to this position.
Key responsibilities:
Ensure patient account receivables records, reports and files are in accordance with established procedures. Develop short and long term goals and objectives for the Patient Accounts department. Develop, recommend and administer major policies and procedures for areas of responsibility. Participate in the development of policies and procedures for other revenue cycle areas as they affect the patient accounts function. Establish and implement controls to ensure appropriate submission, billing and payment cycles according to third-party requirements. Monitor activities with external vendors for billing and improve account receivable processes and maximize net back dollars. Prepare and direct preparation of a variety of monthly reports and statistical studies, which reflect the financial status of the hospital’s accounts receivables.

Prepare the annual budget for the Patient Accounts department. Ensure compliance with governmental, JCAHO and hospital requirements and standards. The selected individual will have a minimum of three years hospital business experience in the areas of billing through collections including supervisory experience. A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or Business Administration preferred; but not mandatory.
