SUMMARY
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for inspecting, disinfecting, assembling, processing and distributing patient care instruments, equipment and supplies in accordance with established policies, procedures and standards. Acts as a role model and resource to peers and other members of the health care team related to processing of equipment, instruments, and supplies. Stores, rotates and ensures all instruments and supplies are correctly labeled.
ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY Reports to: Sterile Processing Manager Provides Supervision to: None Primary Customer Groups: ER, OR, Obstetrics, and all floors requiring Durable Medical Equipment (DME) and pumps. Patient's Served: No direct patient contact.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION
High school diploma or equivalent. Nine months in the Spectrum Health Sterile Processing Tech 1 role or 12 months of related/prior Sterile Processing experience. Certification in sterile processing preferred. Membership to a local, state or national sterile processing related organization preferred.
Working knowledge of infection control, aseptic techniques and sterilization techniques, laws and regulations. Able to read and understand labels/written instructions. Time management and organization skills, Able to follow procedures accurately and promptly. Attention to detail. Ability to make quality, independent decisions. Able to lift equipment and supplies weighting a minimum of 25 pounds. Frequent bending, pushing/pulling loads. Willingness to share pertinent information with the entire Perioperative group.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to continuously stand and/or walk. Frequent bending, pushing, and pulling loads. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must occasionally bend and lift and / or move up to 50 pounds. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens, hazardous materials, and blood and body fluids. Regularly handles cleaning solutions that require wearing personal protection equipment. Frequent exposure to load noise.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Cleans and sterilizes soiled instruments and equipment utilizing the appropriate personal protection equipment (PPE).
Inspects and tests instruments and equipment to ensure proper functioning. Utilizes the insulation tester, leak tester and other mechanical/digital validation tools to ensure sterility and the lack of pathogenic material. Works closely with Plant Operations, Facilities Support Services and all third party vendors to correct malfunctions.
Responsible for maintaining a 99% accuracy rate in the assembly of all surgical case carts and instrument trays including multi-pan, highly complex surgical procedure sets.
Acts as a role model and resource to peers and other members of the health care team related to processing of equipment, instruments, and supplies. Provides mentoring and work direction to other Sterile Processing staff.
Ensures proper processing of equipment, instruments and supplies by prioritizing work to correspond with medical/surgical floor needs, surgical case loads and physician requirements.
Responsible for maintaining adequate implant and surgical instrumentation inventory in addition to ensuring sufficient par levels for supplies, equipment, trays and linen.
Accurately differentiates between instruments functionality and its specialty.
In the absence of team leader and/or supervisor, may be responsible for functioning in a lead role.
Participates in quality monitoring activities including diagnostic cycle, Bowie dick tests and all relative information associated with the Sterile Processing dashboard; utilizing problem-solving techniques with the aid of AAMI standards.
Answer, interpret and fill phone requests and other issues according to departmental standards.
Ensures that services are provided in accordance with state and Federal regulations, organizational policy, and accreditation / compliance requirements.
Participate in departmental staff meetings, in-services and other education offerings under the direction of the leadership team.
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
