Purpose of Job: Under the supervision of the manager and the direction of the RN, the Health Unit Coordinator assists in the maintenance of order for the everyday operations of the department. They are the interdepartmental link that ensures the timely communication of medical and nursing orders. May be requested to work in other nursing departments according to patient/staffing needs. Department Description: Sparrow is the regional high-risk obstetric hospital.
There is a 13-bed Labor and Delivery Unit, an 8-bed OB Special Care Unit and a 6-bed triage area. There are 3 operating rooms. A highly qualified team including nurses, physicians, residents, and anesthesiologists provide care. Sparrow currently delivers over 3,805 babies annually.
Responsibilities: Demonstrates ICARE (behavioral) values, cooperation and positive interpersonal relations when interacting with all person within the hospital environment and community. Entry of physician orders into the computer system, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures. Entry of patient charges into the computer system. Schedules ordered procedures, tests and associated preps, in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Maintains the patients' medical record. Maintains departmental records of admissions and discharges, files, reports, schedules, and the like. Answers telephone, takes and delivers messages, gives out limited factual information. Collects and verifies necessary authorizations as appropriate.
Communicates significant information regarding the patient. Actively participates as a team member. Constructively addresses patient and team issues to insure quality patient care and a collaborative work environment. Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment; utilizes supplies appropriately.
Forwards menus to Food and nutrition Services. Instructs new Associates in order entry and Health Unit Coordinator responsibilities; acts as preceptor for new associates. Maintains hospital standards by participating in mandatory in-services and requirements. Performs additional duties as assigned.
Serves as a role model for consistent demonstration of Sparrow Health System's customer service Behavioral standards of performance, by respecting the Privacy and Confidentiality of those we serve. Follows HIPAA procedures when using and/or disclosing protected health information. Maintains and protects patients rights under the HIPAA Privacy standards. Working Conditions: Potential for exposure to blood borne pathogens and other infectious diseases.
Extensive computer work with the order entry process-at least 50% of work time involved with data entry. Extensive use of hands and arms in a repetitive fashion. Unpredictable mealtimes, breaks are scheduled around patients needs. Potential for chemical exposure.
Use of latex 20% of the time, constantly (76%-100%) exposed to latex environment. Requirements: High school diploma and completion of a Unit Coordinator class. Basic knowledge of medical terminology necessary to accurately complete order entry of physician orders. Clerical skills necessary to perform data entry prepare reports and tabulate routine data.
Effective interpersonal skills for communicating with patients, families, physicians and other hospital associates. Physically able to view a computer CRT for prolonged periods. Must accommodate a flexible schedule.
